Back with the 611

A while ago, we returned to Spencer, North Carolina, where the 611 J-Type steam engine is being restored for the Virginia Museum of Transportation. We filmed elements for several features which are airing in anticipation of the engine's return, under her own power for the first time since the 1980s, on May 30.

When we were there in February, she was still pretty much in pieces, but work was much father along than it looks.

Here we see a volunteers working on one of the long side plates that will cover the body seen in the background.

Volunteer James Stump, Jr., Vice Chairman of the Fire Up 611! Committee, contemplates the engine.

Mr. Stump gives Bob Grebe, Fox 21/27 Morning News anchor, a briefing on what has been done and what the future holds for the 611.

A small ornament in the shape of the Roanoke star hangs off a piece near the engineer's cab, left by one of the volunteers ...
